The story of the heart can never be unwritten.
Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.
But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.
Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

Review
"Love and Other Words is a triumph, the kind of book that makes you feel so deeply for the finely drawn characters that you almost forget they’re fictional. You’ll be swept away by the heartbreak, the joy, the chemistry, and the charisma woven through the fabric of Macy’s and Elliot’s star-crossed relationship. As the story unfolds–expertly interweaving the past with the present—you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll root for Macy and Elliot to find their way back to each other against all odds. A true joy from start to finish." -- Kristin Harmel, internationally bestselling author of The Room on Rue Amelie
“A major success. It’s now obvious that anything Christina Lauren writes is worth checking out, even if it’s out of a reader’s comfort zone. I’ve rarely ventured into the genre and wasn’t sure how different it may be from Christina Lauren’s contemporary romance novels. However, I worried for nothing because I was quickly hooked by Love and Other Words... and would happily recommend it to any Christina Lauren fan or readers looking for a sophisticated story of love and loss.” ― Hypable
"Christina Lauren has found a new sweet spot, with heartbreaking and hopeful language that will evoke the whirlwind immediacy of adolescence and the complicated choices of adulthood. Love and Other Words weaves past and present together in an emotional story that will have you declaring your favorite word is LOVE." -- Amy E. Reichert, author of The Coincidence of Coconut Cake
"Love and Other Words is a beautifully crafted story of friendship and first love, of suffering loss and finding your soulmate. I felt every moment in this book." ― Vilma Iris
"With frank language and patient plotting, this gangly teen crush grows into a confident adult love affair." ― Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“Christina Lauren takes a unique look at the evolution of infatuation” ― Associated Press

Until they run into each other in a café. Macy is a resident, working with children. Elliott works in the book industry and is writing his first novel. They meet and immediately reconnect even though he has a girlfriend and she has a fiancé. So, feelings...
This one goes back and forth between their present day and their childhood. It was really sweet. But also frustrating because you don't really understand what Macy's problem is until the end. And then I was surprised to find myself crying. It was a really sweet book and an easy weekend read.
I’m currently on page 269. This book is super funny and relatable to any teenage girls. I’m 19 and the experiences Macy went through with Elliot are extremely relatable for me as well. (Spoiler alert for anyone who hasn’t read) although her mom did pass away she describes their bond as sacred. I think that’s a beautiful way to describe a mother-daughter relationship.
Macy is a very relatable teenager who’s done things that ALL of us have done when we were 16-18 lol. Which is why when I read her life “then” I always crack up because it reminds me of what I have done when I was her age in “then.” It’s really funny and it’s also really cute. You never forget your first love. It’s a well written story about losing somebody you love, but meeting them again when you’re older and more mature. It’s realistic. I love this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to laugh.

I love their honesty with each other and how unafraid, at least for Elliot, they are to state what they feel and mean and have it be “this is it” right from the beginning. So often characters (and lets face it, us as humans) keep our real thoughts and feelings to ourselves in fear of embarrassment and such and from the beginning of Macy and Elliot meeting as young kids there was an honesty that was so refreshing and, I think, made for deep friendship between the characters.
I loved the back and forth timeline. I always seem to like the ‘then and now’ in books as it really captivates your attention and makes you hooked on what happened and this book does it well. I loved seeing their relationship grow as kids growing up and I also loved the present day interactions and wondering just what happened and still rooting for them anyway. I liked how the characters had redeemable qualities and not so redeemable qualities that made them on a whole more believable as characters.
The only negative, and why this book is 4.5/5 and not 5/5 is the climax of the novel. I won’t spoil it but when we finally find out what drove them apart I was expecting it to be more Macy focused and while it was, there was a side to Elliot’s story that surprised me and I feel like it could have and should have been explored more, especially between two characters that don’t hold back with each other.
Overall I adored this book and would recommend to others.
However, I was not prepared for the main character's mother's death from cancer, which is revealed on the very first page (which was not mentioned in any reviews I read before purchasing and is not a spoiler since it's noted on the very first page of the book). As someone who recently lost my mother to cancer, I wish there had been a trigger warning or note about this somewhere. The theme was central throughout the book, making it a difficult and emotional read for me.
While I continued reading and found the story well-written, I had to take frequent breaks due to the sensitivity of the topic. The ending left me in tears as it mirrored my own experiences, being an only child with just my father left after my mother's recent passing.
Despite the emotional difficulty, I believe the book was good for my grieving process. Still, I would have appreciated a warning to prepare myself for the heavy personal subject matter. In a few years, when my mother's passing isn't as fresh, I think I could have enjoyed this book more.

Everyone needs to read this book! Stop what you’re doing and buy it if you haven’t already! Macy and Elliot are just the type of friends you want to have when you’re growing up. Macy growing up with such tragedy and finding a forever friend in Eli, it’s just amazing to read. All of their first are meant for one another, it just really touched my heart when they reconnect years later. They love is truly magical.I need a second book 😭 this book is unmatched i could not put it down for the life of me 🫶
This book was just 𝘀𝗼 𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗳𝘂𝗹! Elliot and Macy’s love was crystal clear through it all and you could feel the passion in every single word! This felt like a hug in the best way possible!
I loved the dual timeline and that it was just the simplest kind of love, with no grand gestures or anything. It felt so real and the characters were so normal and relatable, which made it easy to connect to it!
From the moments they met as teenagers, I was instantly in love with them, and watching them grow up and get to know one another was heartwarming. Their time among the books and the way they interacted with each other was just precious.
This is a slow read, but in my opinion is definitely worth it. I cried more than I expected but I just really connected to the story and I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything more!
